A quad is a four-person round robin section in which all participants play each other once (three rounds). This tournament features two quads: a 10 AM quad and a 1 PM quad. Quads go by fast, so we encourage players to play both quads if their schedule allows for it.
Our quads are open to all scholastic players in grades K-12, and each quad will be divided based on rating rather than grade. The advantage of quads is that players get the chance to compete against opponents with similar US Chess ratings. (Also, quads often finish quickly because we can pair the next round as soon as the two games in the quad are finished.)
This tournament is called "Quads & Analysis" because National Master Sam Martin will be offering free game analysis for participants in this tournament. We first experimented with this format (Quads & Analysis) back in 2017, and at the time it was very popular, so we decided to bring it back again in 2025!

Tournament Information:

  • This tournament is called "Quads & Analysis" because National Master Sam Martin will be offering free game analysis for participants in this tournament.
    • Although chess notation is not required, participants are recommended to record their moves so they can have their games analyzed.
    • Kids are encourage to watch NM Sam Martin analyze other players' games as well in addition to their own games.
    • NM Sam Martin will do the best he can to analyze as many games as possible during the time available.
  • Location: Hampton Inn by Hilton Washington-Dulles International Airport South on 4050 Westfax Drive, Chantilly, VA 20151
  • Two Quad Events: 10 am & 1 pm (suggested to play both)
  • Each quad is 3 rounds. Quads can last up to 3 hours, but often finish in as little as 1 or 2 hours if games go by quickly.
    • One advantage of quads is we do not have to wait for all games to finish to start the next round. As soon as the four players are finished in your child's quad, we will start the next game right away.
    • Quads are four-person round robin sections divided by rating (see explanation above for more details).
  • DO NOT BE LATE! Unlike most of our tournaments, due to the nature of quads, this tournament will involve a check-in process to verify that everyone is present. A player who is more than 10 minutes late will be removed from the pairings for the first round and likely the entire tournament as well.
  • US Chess regular and quick rated. Time control: Game in 25 minutes with a 5-second delay.
  • Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day), 10 am to 1 pm & 1 pm to 4 pm (quads can take up to 3 hours but can sometimes finish in as little as 1 or 2 hours)
  • Entry fees:
    • By Wednesday, 5/21: $55 for both quads (suggested), $35 for just 1 quad
    • By Sunday, 5/25: $60 for both quads (suggested), $40 for just 1 quad
    • On the day of the tournament, 5/26: $65 for both quads (suggested), $45 for just 1 quad
  • PRIZES: Medal to the winner of each quad!
  • We will have enough chess sets for all players. If you would like to use a clock, please bring one.
  • Free parking available at the hotel.
  • This tournament is not open to adults (only scholastic players in grades K-12).

DMV Chess Quad Special Rules Disclosure:

The tournament director has maximum flexibility and discretion to make adjustments to the pairings in this quads tournament. Examples of situations that may require us to change the pairings include but are not limited to the following: avoiding siblings being in the same quad, avoiding quads that involve mostly/entirely unrated players, handling absent or late players, dealing with a number of total registrations that is not divisible by four, etc.

Unlike most of our tournaments, due to the nature of quads, this tournament will involve a check-in process to verify that everyone is present. A player who is more than 10 minutes late will be removed from the pairings for the first round and likely the entire tournament as well. Please do not be late!
