2010 Maryland State Girls Championship Results

The 6th Annual Maryland State Girls Chess Championship was held today (Sat Jan 30, 2010) at Roland Park Country School in Baltimore, MD. Despite reassurances to the contrary, it did snow in Baltimore about 3-5" during the tournament. A total of 62 girls were able to make the trip.

For the 3rd straight year, Fiona Lam (9th grade) from Richard Montgomery High School (Montgoemery County) retains the title of Maryland State Girls Champion.

2010 Maryland States Results (2)

The 2010 Maryland Scholastic Chess Championships were held from March 20th to 21st in Hagerstown, MD. Over 350 players from pre-K to Seniors in high school participated.
The winner of the High School Championship section was Charles Yang a 9th grader from Montgomery Blair High. Montgomery Blair was the top high school team in the championship section.
In the Middle School Championship section Jonathan Chen from Cabin John Middle School was the winner and Cross Country Elementary/Middle was the top middle school team.
In the Elementary School Championship section Jerry Wu from Framland Elementary is the individual champion and Travilah was the championship school.
In the K-3 Primary Championship section Derek Mizushima (Potomac) and Michael Schwartz (Stone Mill) are the co-champions and Stone Mill is the championship school.

Allen J. Beadle, 1947-2023

Allen Beadle, a longtime tournament director, chess leader, and Maryland Chess Newsletter editor passed away on Wednesday, November 8th. He spent many years enjoying chess and played at the Laurel Chess Club.

Age 76, of Clio, Allen Beadle passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Ascension Genesys with his family by his side. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at Flint Memorial Park Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be placed on Allen's tribute wall at martinfuneralhome. com. Allen was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on January 18, 1947, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris and Nora (Cole) Beadle. Educated locally, Allen attended Genesee High School and graduated with the Class of 1965. Shortly after graduation, Allen proudly enlisted in the United States Army. Upon his return to the States, he went on to obtain his Ph. D. in mathematics from Michigan State University. Allen had a prestigious career and used his education and gift of numbers to work as a mathematician for the Department of Defense until his retirement in 2007. Allen spent many years living in Maryland while working. While he was there, he took on the amazing hobby of beekeeping. He also was studying Russian and Japanese. Playing chess was Allen's favorite pastime. He was a chess champion as well as a director of the chess club in Maryland. Allen was a gifted musician and enjoyed playing the drums and piano. He also enjoyed painting and was a wonderful artist. Allen had a beautiful library in his home with hundreds of books. To say he loved to read would be an understatement. Allen enjoyed spending time with his beloved cats and his friends and family. He will be greatly missed. Left to cherish Allen's memory are his siblings: Bobbie Shock and significant other, Larry Gallaty, Craig and wife, Susanna Beadle; nieces: Chrisi Shock and Brittany Beadle; long-time best friends: Dan and Patty Seitz. Allen was preceded in death by his parents.

Denis Strenzwilk (1940-2016): in Memoriam

Denis passed away April 14, 2016. He was 75. He got hooked on chess in 1958 while he was a freshman at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY. His first USCF tournament was played in DC in 1961 where he acquired a 1600 rating. In graduate school at Clarkson University, he met a group of ardent chess players and reached 1900-2000 strength. Graduating in 1968 with a Ph.D in solid state physics, he moved to Maryland and took a job at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds where he spent his entire working career.
