To Friday 07 July 2017 - 04:00pm
For Beginning and Intermediate Players!
THE PROGRAM
Students will be instructed in the foundational theory of chess and will then apply their
newly acquired knowledge in games played with classmates and their national chess master
teachers. While players are engaged in critical thought and active play, the instructors will
provide tactical ideas and suggestions to improve the players’ strategies. Chess has been
called “gymnastics for the brain” and research shows that studying the game can significantly
improve academic achievement, concentration, and critical thinking. Additionally, the
strategies and tactics that the players learn will benefit them on the game board and in life.
THE STAFF
Chess Camp Director and National Chess Master Arkadiy Frenkel has over 30 years of
international experience. He has taught at local schools such as Fort Garrison Elementary,
Ilchester Elementary, McDonogh School, Park School, and the Montgomery County Public
Schools. He has also taught at chess camps and schools in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Several
of Frenkel’s students have won state and national tournaments, and the high school team he
coached in 2010 placed second in the National Girls Team Championship. For this summer
program, Frenkel will be joined by chess masters William Morrison and Glenn Segal.
